The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, in partnership with Samagra Shiksha Assam, held a science and maths Olympiad to encourage students' scientific curiosity.
According to a news statement from IIT Guwahati, more than 1.14 lakh students from 3,828 schools in Assam took part in the event, which intended to improve students' STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills.
“IIT Guwahati has been working very closely with the education department of Assam in enhancing the STEM activities across the state and promoting it through lively activities such as Olympiads," said Professor Parameswar K Iyer, Dean PRBR, IIT Guwahati.
The Olympiad had the following objectives, according to IIT Guwahati-
Promoting scientific inquiry and mathematical reasoning among students.
Developing talent in STEM subjects.
Giving students a competitive platform to showcase their skills and abilities.
Raising awareness about the significance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education among students and educators
Developing students critical thinking and creativity capabilities
The olympiad was divided into two phases: an OMR-based test for secondary school students throughout the state, followed by a state-level round. The district-level test was conducted on March 18, 2024, according to the press announcement.
The top two performers from each district were chosen to compete in the final round of the Olympiad at IIT Guwahati. This phase provided an opportunity for the finalists to interact with peers from across the state. The final round, held on March 30, 2024, featured 62 finalists from classes 9th and 10th, with three state winners emerging, according to the institute.
