The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early on March 26 after a cargo ship crashed with a pylon, causing the suspected death of six people who plummeted into the cold waters below. The incident has halted operations at one of the busiest ports on the United States' Eastern Seaboard.

10:30 pm IST (March 26): Power Failure On Container Ship

The container ship Dali lost power at 10:30 p.m. IST while navigating the Patapsco River on its way to Sri Lanka. This outage caused all of the vessel's lights to go out.

10:27 pm IST: Bridge Collision

Three minutes later, at 10:27 pm IST, the container ship crashed with a bridge pylon, inflicting substantial structural damage and ultimately collapsing into the water below.

Causes Of Bridge Collapse: Design Flaws In Bridge Structure

Engineers attribute the collapse on the design of the metal truss bridge with a suspended deck. This design element increased the bridge's vulnerability to impact.

Impact On The Bridge Foundation

The container ship collided with a large concrete pier, a critical component of the bridge's foundation that is submerged and supported by soil.

Casualties And Rescue Efforts, Including Missing Persons

Six people are missing and feared dead, according to Maryland state police records. These people are thought to have fallen into the freezing waters after the collapse.

Rescue Operations

Two people were retrieved from the sea, one unhurt and the other gravely injured. Notably, a construction crew was on the bridge at the time, and eight people fell into the river as it collapsed.

Life Saving Measures

The Maryland governor emphasized that authorities were able to avert further tragedies by swiftly suspending traffic on the bridge after the container ship filed a distress call.
