The Indian Army Has Inducted Its First Apache 451 Aviation Squadron

Description

The Indian Army has formed its first squadron, the 451 Aviation Squadron, to operate the newly purchased AH-64E Apache assault helicopter. The squadron was formally created on March 15 in Jodhpur.

Induction Timeline

• The Army will receive its first batch of three Apache helicopters in May 2024.

• Another three Apaches will be admitted in July 2024.

Apache Partners With Boeing

• In February 2020, India inked a contract with Boeing worth approximately $800 million for six Apache helicopters for the Indian Army.

• Under the terms of the agreement, Boeing educated six Indian Army pilots and 24 technicians in the United States.

The Army's First Dedicated Attack Helicopters

• The Indian Army Aviation Corps has so far solely used utility helicopters.

• With the introduction of Apaches and the indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), the Army will have its first specialized assault helicopters.

• In November 2022, the first LCH squadron, 351 Army Aviation, was deployed to Missamari, Assam, along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

More Procurement Planned

• The Indian government had already approved the purchase of 39 AH-64 Apache helicopters from the United States, with 22 going to the Indian Air Force.

• The Army is lobbying for the purchase of 11 additional Apache helicopters.

• The Defense Acquisition Council has also approved the purchase of 156 LCH, with 90 for the Army and 66 for the Air Force.

The Army's Attack Helicopter Fleet

• Aside from the Apaches and LCH, the Indian Army has 75 Rudra helicopters, which are armed versions of the Advanced Light Helicopter.

The introduction of these new attack helicopters is intended to considerably improve the Indian Army's air assault and offensive capability.
