The Educational Testing Service (ETS) has announced that US universities will be able to certify TOEFL test scores through their Indian study-abroad partners.

Princeton-based ETS, which administers exams such as the TOEFL and GRE, has teamed with Career Mosaic, a top student recruiter for US universities in South Asia, to verify scores.

According to officials, US universities will have access to validated scores beginning this week, significantly increasing the credibility of student profiles shared with them. The move will also reduce the administrative burden for US universities, resulting in a smoother and more efficient student enrolment process.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test used to assess the English language skills of non-native speakers intending to enroll in English-speaking universities.

The test is recognized by more than 12,000 institutions in over 160 countries and is universally accepted in prominent locations such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as by over 98% of universities in the United Kingdom.

“We are excited to partner with Career Mosaic to verify TOEFL scores of US university applicants, enhancing the university’s trust in the scores submitted. This collaboration underscores the joint commitment of both organisations in providing universities with reliable and efficient solutions for evaluating the English language proficiency of prospective students,” said Sachin Jain, ETS India and South Asia.

Last year, ETS made a number of improvements to the 60-year-old test to ensure that people taking it had the best possible experience. They included reducing the time to less than two hours instead of three and allowing candidates to see their official score release date after completing the test.

“The TOEFL score verification services offered by ETS through Career Mosaic in India can significantly enhance the credibility of student profiles shared with US Institutions. This association will reinforce the integrity of the TOEFL test score and will benefit both universities and the growing number of Indian students seeking higher education opportunities in the USA,” Manisha Zaveri, joint managing director at Career Mosaic, said.

Blerina Polovina, director of international admissions and business development at Webster University USA, applauded the initiative, saying that validating TOEFL scores will assist universities expedite the admissions process, speeding student onboarding.

“By having validated scores, universities will save the effort of English proficiency score verification, ultimately fostering a more seamless and reliable admissions experience for both students and universities alike,” Polovina added.

According to ETS statistics, the number of candidates attempting TOEFL in India has increased by 59% since foreign travel began following the COVID-19 pandemic halt. Indians account for more than 12% of TOEFL test takers worldwide.
