Description

Jeddah recently celebrated the inauguration of the world's first 3D-printed mosque. The mosque, located in Jeddah's Al-Jawhara district, is named after the late Abdulaziz Abdullah Sharbatly and was commissioned by his widow, Saudi businesswoman Wajnat Abdulwahed, in memory of her late husband.

National Housing Co.'s Portfolio And Fursan Real Estate

The unique mosque is part of the National Housing Co. portfolio and was unveiled in front of prominent government officials and business executives. Abdulwahed, the leader of Fursan Real Estate, oversaw the construction of the 5,600-square-meter mosque, which used cutting-edge 3D printers from Guanli, a well-known Chinese manufacturer of three-dimensional printing technology.

Mosque Design And Architectural Details

In an interview with Arab News, Abdulwahed discussed the mosque's interior and external aesthetics. The design concept aims to instill a sense of peace in worshippers through the principle of gracious welcome. The mosque's design was centered on a circle that can be readily directed towards the qibla, with great consideration given to the building's bulk, relationship with natural light, entry and gate design, and outside facades to express the architectural identity.

Distinctive Minarets And An Inspired Outdoor Area

The mosque's minarets were built to be a unique landmark in the neighborhood. The design of the open outdoor area was inspired by Hijr Ismail near the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque, and it serves as an extension for attendees outside the mosque during Friday prayers, Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, and Eid. These distinguishing features make the Abdulaziz Abdullah Sharbatly Mosque a very remarkable monument, the first of its sort in the world.

Challenges And Considerations

According to Abdulwahed, the most difficult obstacle encountered during construction was the utilization of 3D printing technology, which is a novel, complicated, and very exact process for creating a physical building from a computer file. The work and execution had to be done in a completely different way than previous approaches, which necessitated meticulous planning during the building design.

It was critical to preserve the essence that mosques must express while adhering to general standards such as highlighting the ideals of the King Salman Urban Charter, combining architectural aspects from the cultural heritage of Hejazi architecture, and presenting them in a contemporary context.

Collaborative Efforts And Future Implications

The successful completion of the world's first 3D-printed mosque demonstrates the joint efforts of many parties, including government officials, corporate leaders, and innovators. The use of 3D printing technology in construction has enormous potential for the future of architecture and design since it reduces material waste while increasing efficiency in the building sector.

The use of this technology to construct the world's first 3D-printed mosque establishes a precedent for future advances and strengthens Saudi Arabia's status as a technical hub.
