Description
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Sabarmati Ashram to officially open Kochrab Ashram and launch the Gandhi Ashram Memorial Master Plan. This major event celebrated Mahatma Gandhi's legacy and contributions to India's freedom movement.
Kochrab Ashram
Gandhi established it on May 25, 1915, when he returned from South Africa.
Gandhi's first Ashram in India focused on farming, cow rearing, Khadi, and constructive activities.
Originally placed on desolate terrain near the Sabarmati River, the Ashram was later relocated for both practical and symbolic purposes.
The tale of Dadhichi Rishi affected the move, as did Gandhi's deliberate placement between a jail and a crematorium.
Sabarmati Ashram
Originally known as Satyagraha Ashram, it became a symbol of India's struggle for independence.
Gandhi lived here from 1917 to 1930, encouraging nonviolence and self-reliance.
On March 12, 1930, the Ashram served as the starting point for the famous Dandi March, a protest against the British Salt Law.
Despite government pressure, Gandhi refused to give up the Ashram, disbanding it only in 1933, when India's independence seemed certain.
