The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) will implement a semester system in Class 11 by the academic year 2024-25. The system will eventually be expanded to Class 12 in the academic year 2025-26.
According to the West Bengal Council, the state school education department has granted authorization to adopt the method at the higher secondary level in schools. Furthermore, the council will soon publish a complete syllabus as well as a semester-by-semester implementation plan on its official website.
Council President Chiranjib Bhattacharjee issued an official notification on behalf of the WBCHSE, stating that the state school education department has given them permission to implement the semester system at the higher secondary level beginning with the academic session 2024-25 for Class 11 and then from the academic session 2025-26 for Class 12.
WBCHSE Proposal For The Semester System
In October 2023, the West Bengal education department decided to form a four-member group to develop a framework and plan for implementing the semester system. The panel included the joint director of school education, Chinmoyee Pattanayak, the council president, and the school education commissioner. The report was due to the panel in November.
The committee's duties included assessing the plan, considering current practices, and making decisions for academic sessions that followed state education policy.
The president of WBCHSE had filed a proposal to establish the semester in Class 11. In light of state education policy, the education department felt obligated to consider the request. To ease the burden on students, the West Bengal government stated on September 5, 2023, the need to gradually implement the semester system.
