The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted autonomy to some universities. This approach will provide them greater autonomy and flexibility in making academic and administrative decisions. However, the level of autonomy may differ across various universities.
The universities include the University of Delhi, the University of Hyderabad, the Central University of Punjab, the Central University of Rajasthan, and Maulana Azad National Hindu University, among others.
UGC Releases List Of Autonomous Universities
The UGC has published a list of universities that have been given graded autonomy under the University Grants Commission (Categorization of Universities (only) for Grant of Graded Autonomy) Regulations of 2018. According to UGC Chairperson M Jagadesh, these universities are classified as either I or II based on their NAAC grading.
DU Teachers Criticize The UGC's Move To Grant Autonomy
Meanwhile, some Delhi University lecturers are denouncing the move to grant autonomy, arguing that it is designed to withhold finances for any future extensions, shifting the burden of maintenance and development to students and parents.
