Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first underwater metro train service in Kolkata, marking a watershed moment in the country's infrastructure and urban development. The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Section Is A Technological Marvel
The underwater metro track is part of the vast 16.6 km Howrah Maidan-Esplanade stretch, which is notable for its journey beneath the Hooghly River. The service includes three subterranean stops, and the metro is scheduled to travel a 520-meter section beneath the river in 45 seconds, demonstrating outstanding engineering and technological breakthroughs.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Bengal Governor Dr. CV Ananda Bose, Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari, and other dignitaries, marking a momentous occasion for the project, which had previously completed successful trial runs in April 2023. The presence of students from several schools on the maiden metro voyage lent a lively element to the historic occasion.
Engineering And Construction Highlights
The tunnel, which is 26 meters below the river's surface, permits trains to operate 16 meters beneath the riverbed, exhibiting India's first metro train project under a river. This effort aims to drastically reduce traffic congestion in Kolkata by providing a sustainable and effective alternative to vehicle transport.
According to the Ministry of Railways, 10.8 kilometers of the East-West Metro route will be subterranean, with the remaining 5.75 kilometers elevated. This combination of underground and elevated routes is intended to significantly improve urban mobility in the metropolis.

The ambitious Kolkata Metro project has had delays, most notably owing to an accident during digging work in Bowbazar, but it has now reached a critical milestone with the launch of the underwater metro line. The Prime Minister also plans to inaugurate new metro sections in Kolkata, expanding the city's metro network and improving public transit.
The underwater metro project, which began in 2009 with tunnelling under the Hooghly River in 2017, has encountered obstacles, including an aquifer burst and associated ground subsidence in Bowbazar.
