Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has formally launched India's first National Dolphin Research Center (NDRC). This iconic facility, which cost Rs 30 crore to build, is located on the Ganges River's banks within the Patna University campus.
Focus On Gangetic Dolphin Conservation
The NDRC's major goal is to help researchers and students understand the behavior and ecology of freshwater dolphins, particularly the endangered Gangetic dolphin. These intriguing creatures live in South Asia's Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems, and their existence was first recorded in 1801.
Protecting A National Treasure
Hunting Gangetic dolphins is absolutely prohibited under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act of 1972. According to a 2018 survey conducted by the Bihar government, an estimated 1,048 dolphins live in the Ganges River, emphasizing the necessity of conservation initiatives.
Overcoming Delays On A Crucial Project
The NDRC was originally scheduled to open in December 2023, however building issues caused delays. Chief Minister Kumar lay the foundation stone for the center in 2020, and the project was approved in 2013 at the suggestion of Professor R.K. Sinha, a famous dolphin researcher. However, securing the requisite licenses for building near the Ganges River proved difficult, prompting the postponement.
Broader Environmental Impact
The NDRC is projected to have major benefits beyond dolphin research. Vivek Suhani, an environmental science alumnus from Patna University, believes the center will be extremely beneficial to students interested in environmental research. He emphasizes that the NDRC "will also help in understanding the ecosystem of the river and aquatic ecology."
A Step Forward For Conservation
The formation of the NDRC is a crucial step toward better understanding and safeguarding the Gangetic dolphin. This critical research facility has the ability to not only protect this endangered species, but also contribute to a better understanding of the Ganges River ecology as a whole.
