In February 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a spectacular 50-year anniversary ceremony of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which promotes all Amul milk and dairy products, and called on the dairy cooperative to become the world's number one dairy corporation.
Current Ranking Of Amul
Amul is currently regarded as the world's eighth largest dairy firm, with annual domestic sales of around Rs 80,000 crore from its popular milk, cheese, ice cream, chocolates, and other dairy products, which are also exported to 57 countries.
GCMMF's milk processing capacity exceeds 35 million liters per day. The global dairy corporations list is topped by European and New Zealand players who benefited from early consolidation.
The Prime Minister urged all parties to work together to become Amul the world's largest dairy firm. Amul's MD acknowledged that the company fully supports the strategy, with revenues expected to exceed Rs 1 lakh crore by 2025-26.
The Journey Of Amul
Amul was founded on December 19, 1946, in reaction to the exploitation of small dairy farmers by traders and agents. GCMMF was founded in 1973 when six dairy cooperatives banded together under the direction of social entrepreneur and dairy engineer Dr Verghese Kurien, known as the 'Milkman of India'. The Kaira Union, which had owned the brand name Amul since 1955, donated it to GCMMF.
Since then, Amul has grown tremendously, collecting milk from over 4 million farmers everyday across 40 dairies and effectively distributing it statewide via its huge network, thereby improving many people's lives. In 1970, the cooperative led the 'Operation Flood', often known as India's White Revolution.
India Is Become The Biggest Milk Producer
Over the next decade, the co-operative grew to become the leading ice cream brand. Following 2010, GCMMF expanded its milk production beyond Gujarat, marking a significant milestone.
Currently, the GCMMF has 18 member unions representing over 3.6 million farmers spread throughout 18,600 villages in Gujarat. Over the last 50 years, GCMMF has helped India become the world's greatest milk producer, accounting for 24% of global milk production.
Major Global Dairy Firms
Danone S.A. of France, Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group Co. Ltd. of China, and Fonterra Group Cooperative Limited of New Zealand are among the major players influencing the dairy market landscape.
While speaking at the occasion, Prime Minister Modi promised the audience that his government will continue to support Amul's worldwide aspirations in the long run, underlining that it was a national priority.
