Description
The Arunachal Pradesh government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) to form the state's first Special Tiger Protection Force. This measure intends to enhance conservation efforts and protect the state's tiger population.
Establishing The Special Tiger Protection Force
Arunachal Pradesh, famed for its biodiversity, has three tiger reserves: Namdapha, Kamlang, and Pakke. Despite these reserves, the state lacked a committed force to conserve tigers. Following the signing of the MoU, a specialized force of 336 personnel would be deployed across these reserves.
Funding Support And Deployment Strategy
Under the terms of the MoU, the NTCA has agreed to provide financial assistance for the STPF's establishment, equipping, and deployment. The central government will supply 90% of the funds, with the state government providing the remaining 10%. Each tiger reserve will have 112 staff, ensuring complete coverage and protection.
Addressing The Declining Tiger Population
The 2022 tiger census found a significant drop in tiger numbers, emphasising the importance of such measures. From 29 tigers in 2018, the population has plummeted to just nine in 2022 among three reserves. This loss raised alarms and demonstrated the critical need for conservation initiatives.
Objectives Of The Special Tiger Protection Force
The STPF's major mandate will be to protect the environment, forest, and climate change department's assets, particularly those located in tiger reserves. This involves stopping poaching actions against tigers and other wildlife species. The force intends to reduce illicit activities that endanger the region's biodiversity by improving monitoring and enforcement efforts.
