Four bone fragments of Lord Buddha, known as Kapilvastu Relics, are currently housed in the National Museum and will be transferred to Thailand in about 30 years.
About The Kapilvastu Relics
The relics were discovered at Piprahwa in Uttar Pradesh's Siddharthnagar District, which was once part of the ancient city of Kapilavastu.
In 1898, William Claxton Peppé, a British colonial engineer and estate manager, discovered an inscribed casket near the Piprahwa stupa.
The inscription on the casket lid refers to Buddha's relics and his community, the Sakya.
History
According to Buddhist beliefs, at the age of 80, Buddha attained salvation in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar district.
The Mallas of Kushinagar cremated his body with ceremonies appropriate for a universal king.
His funeral pyre relics were collected and divided into eight shares, which were distributed to the Ajathsatrus of Magadha, the Licchavis of Vaishali, the Sakyas of Kapilavastu, the Mallas of Kushinagar, the Bullies of Allakappa, the Mallas of Pava, the Koliyas of Ramagrama, and a Brahmana of Vethadipa.
The goal was to erect stupas over sacred relics.
Two more stupas appeared, one over the urn where the relics had been collected and the other over the embers.
Thus, stupas built over Buddha's bodily relics (Saririkastupas) are the oldest surviving Buddhist shrines.
It is said that Ashoka (circa 272-232 BCE), an ardent Buddhist, opened seven of these eight stupas and collected a large portion of the relics for enshrinement within the innumerable (84000 stupas) that he built in an effort to popularize Buddhism and spread the dharma.
