The National Council for Transgender People (NCTP) recently held its pivotal meeting, which was chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
About The National Council For Transgender People
It is a statutory body set up under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019 to protect the rights of transgender people in India.
It is in charge of monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, as well as recommending measures to the government to promote and protect transgender people's rights.
Aims
To focus on livelihood issues while also raising awareness about the trans community in order to achieve the goal of social justice and ensure that transpeople are accepted within families and society as a whole.
To ensure the establishment of transgender welfare boards in all states, as well as the meeting of the transgender community's basic needs such as housing, food, healthcare, and education.
Composition
The Chairperson is the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment (ex officio).
The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment serves as the council's Vice-Chairperson (ex-officio).
The other members of the Council include representatives from various Ministries/Departments.
Five representatives from the transgender community.
Representatives from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Commission for Women (NCW), as well as representatives from state governments and universities, and experts from non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Features
It advises the Central Government on transgender-related policies, programmes, legislation, and projects.
It monitors and evaluates the impact of policies and programmes aimed at achieving equality and full participation for transgender people.
It reviews and coordinates the activities of all government departments, as well as other governmental and non-governmental organizations dealing with transgender issues.
It addresses the grievances of transgender people.
Performs any other functions as directed by the Central Government.
