Description
The European Union has recently launched Mission Aspides to protect commercial ships in the Red Sea from attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
About Mission Aspides
It is an EU naval mission to protect cargo ships in the Red Sea from attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels.
It will deploy European warships and airborne early warning systems to the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and adjacent waters.
So far, France, Germany, Italy, and Belgium have announced their intention to contribute ships.
Aspides vessels, whose operational command centre will be in the Greek city of Larissa, will be instructed to fire on the Houthis only if they attack first, and will not be permitted to shoot preemptively.
The mission is scheduled for one year but may be extended.

It is a semi-enclosed Indian Ocean inlet (or extension) that connects the African and Asian continents. It's one of the world's warmest seas.
It is linked to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean to the south via the Gulf of Aden and the narrow strait of Bab El-Mandeb.
The Sinai Peninsula divides the northern portion of the Red Sea into the Gulfs of Aqaba and Suez, which are connected to the Mediterranean Sea via the famous Suez Canal.
Bordering Nations
Yemen and Saudi Arabia share a border with the Red Sea to the east.
It is bounded by Egypt to the north and west, and Sudan, Eritrea, and Djibouti to the west.
This sea has a surface area of approximately 438,000 km2 and a length of about 2,250 km.
The sea's maximum width is 355 kilometers, and its deepest point is 3,040 meters at the central Suakin Trough, with an estimated average depth of 490 meters.
Islands
Tiran Island, located near the mouth of the Gulf of Aqaba, and Shadwan Island, located at the Gulf of Suez's entrance, are two well-known islands.
