The state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has issued a tender worth approximately Rupees 65,000 crore for the implementation of the phase-III BharatNet project.
About The BharatNet Project
It is one of the largest rural telecom projects in the world.
It is being implemented gradually in all Gram Panchayats across the country to ensure that all telecom service providers have equal access to broadband connectivity.
Objective
To enable access providers such as mobile operators, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), cable TV operators, and content providers to launch a variety of services in rural and remote India, including e-health, e-education, and e-governance.
The plan was approved in 2011.
It is being carried out by a Special Purpose Vehicle called Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL), which was established in 2012 under the Indian Companies Act 1956.
The Telecom Commission approved the project's three-phase implementation.
BharatNet Phase I
The National Optical Fibre Network (now BharatNet) project was approved in 2011 to provide broadband connectivity at the Gram Panchayat (GP) level by connecting block headquarters to GPs using existing fibre from Central Public Sector Undertakings such as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and RailTel Corporation of India Limited, as well as laying incremental fibre to bridge the connectivity gap up to the GPs.
BharatNet Phase II
It was approved in 2017, and it incorporates the project's Phase I implementation experience while also aligning it with Digital India's vision.
The modified strategy connects Gram Panchayats (GPs) using an optimal mix of media (OFC, radio, and satellite).
Under Phase II, GPs will be connected using a variety of implementation models, including the State-led Model, the Private Sector Model, and the CPSU Model, as well as last-mile connectivity in GPs via Wi-Fi or another suitable broadband technology.
In the third phase, from 2019 to 2023, a cutting-edge, future-proof network would be built, including fiber between districts and blocks and a ring topology for redundancy.
