Description

The Indian Army intends to acquire 1,770 technologically superior Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs) as part of a $57 billion homegrown initiative to replace its aging Russian-origin T-72 fleet after 2030. A request for proposal (RFP) would most likely be issued this year to identify Indian manufacturers through a competitive process.

Envisaged Technology Capabilities

The 50-tonne tanks will include artificial intelligence, drone integration, network-centric warfare capabilities, active protection systems, and advanced electronics. Manned-unmanned teaming and augmented crew visualization are further highlights that meet global norms.

Acquisition And Induction Plans

The program will be carried out in three parts over a decade, exploiting iterative technology breakthroughs.  The first phase will see the induction of 590 Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs).

Each batch will receive incremental capability enhancements beyond firepower, mobility, and armor protection to maximize war effectiveness in the following decades.

Mitigating Recent War Limitations

The Indian Army intends to use a comprehensive approach to overcoming the constraints of platform-centric tank employment, as demonstrated during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This comprises all-encompassing operational integration, which includes infantry, artillery, logistical modules, and other elements that compliment armoured thrusts.

T-72 Family Tanks

The T-72 is a class of Soviet main combat tanks that began production in 1969. Approximately 25,000 T-72 tanks have been manufactured, and repair has allowed many to continue in service for decades. It has been widely sold and used in 40 countries and various scenarios. The production and development of many updated T-72 versions continues today.

Ongoing Modernization Efforts

While the FRCV takes shape gradually, tank capabilities development continues in parallel. In addition to continuing procurement and upgrading activities, the Indian Army has already inducted 1,200 T-90S 'Bhishma' tanks.  It also intends to introduce the first batch of 118 indigenous Arjun Mark-1A tanks this year. These tanks come with a variety of upgrades that improve firepower, mobility, endurance, and protection.

Furthermore, the Army plans to deploy 354 indigenous light tanks for high-altitude warfare under 'Project Zorawar'. These tanks, built for greater performance in steep terrain, will supplement existing tank capabilities, notably in areas such as eastern Ladakh.

Meanwhile, various upgrading projects are ongoing to improve the operational capabilities of current tank fleets. This includes equipping T-72 tanks with 1000-horsepower engines, sophisticated thermal sights, fire detection systems, and other upgrades.

Changes In The Parameters Of Battle Tanks

The Indian Army has revised the requirements for the forthcoming Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) tank, which would be manufactured locally beginning in 2030. This modification is a response to the new level of obstacles encountered during the Russia-Ukraine war. As a result, the FRCV has switched to a heavier 55-57ton tank configuration, indicating a change in tank design and capability.
