Description

Archaeologists recently discovered an eighth-century Kotravai sculpture, which dates back to the Pallava period, near Ulundurpet in Tamil Nadu.

The Pallava Dynasty

  • The Pallava Dynasty ruled South India from the third to the ninth centuries.

  • They ruled over northern Tamil Nadu, parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, with Kanchipuram as their capital.

  • The Pallavas patronized music, painting, and literature while also supporting Buddhism, Jainism, and the Brahminical faith.

Origin

  • Pallava Dynasty was previously feudatories of the Andhra Satavahanas. After their defeat at Amaravati, the Pallavas gained independence.

  • They gradually moved southward, establishing their capital at Kanchipuram in the fourth century CE.

  • The Pallava realm's wealth and vigour increased during the reigns of Mahendravarman I (571–630 CE) and Narasimhavarman I (630–668 CE).

  • Hiuen Tsang, a Chinese traveler, portrays Bodhidharma, the founder of China's Chan (Zen) school of Buddhism, as a Pallava prince. Tsang visited Kanchipuram during the Pallava era and praised the benevolent decrees.

Architecture

  • The Pallava Dynasty was known for promoting Dravidian architecture.

  • They were the most well-known for temple architecture. They contributed significantly to the transition from rock-cut architecture to stone temples.

  • The Pallavas' most notable architectural achievements can be found in Mahabalipuram, which became a major center of art, architecture, and literature during their reign.

  • Narasimhavarman II built the Kailasanatha Temple in Kanchipuram, as well as the Shore Temple.

  • Kailasanatha and Vaikuntaperumal are the most well-known temples in terms of architecture.

  • The Vaikuntaperumal shrine is a multi-story temple built in the 8th century A.D. that is well-known for its sculptures depicting Pallava history.

  • They converted to the local religion, Shaivism, and became Dravidians.

Combats During The Pallava Dynasty

  • Throughout their rule, they were at odds with both the Chalukya Dynasty in the north and the Tamil kingdoms of Chola and Pandyas in the south.

  • The Pallavas were engaged in constant battle with the Chalukyas of Badami before being hidden by the Chola kings in the eighth century CE.

Decline

  • The Pallava Dynasty had declined as the Rashtrakutas rose to power.

  • In 897 AD, Vijayalaya, the Chola King, decisively defeated Aparajitavarman, the last Pallava King.
