Description
The Odisha government intends to introduce the Nutana Unnata Abhilasha, Odisha (Nua-O) scholarship scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The state government intends to provide financial assistance of Rupees 9000 to male students and Rupees 10,000 to female students each year through this program.
Meanwhile, male students from SC, ST, and Nirman Shramik (construction worker) families will receive Rupees 10,000, while female students in the same categories will receive Rupees 11,000 per year. V K Pandian, Chairperson of 5T (transformational initiative) and Nabin Odisha scheme, stated at an event in Jaipur that the scholarship programme aims to empower youth by providing continuous skilling, re-skilling, and up-skilling opportunities.
The decision to introduce the Nua-O scholarship was made at a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The new programme was announced at the Nu-O festival in Jaipur.
Nua-O Scholarship Program Details
The Nua-O scheme, with a budget of Rupees 385 crore, aims to cover 30 districts across the state from fiscal years 2023-24 to 2025-26. The program will focus more on students from tribal and remote areas. The scholarship will be available to students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs at state universities, government and non-government aided colleges, including Sanskrit colleges run by the Higher Education Department.
Eligible students can apply for the scholarship scheme for the current academic year beginning February 20, 2024. Speaking at the event, V K Pandian stated that this will be a new era of student empowerment aimed at achieving the Chief Minister's vision of 'Nabin Odisha' (New Odisha). Furthermore, a fund of Rupees 300 crore will be established, and by August 2024, all eligible students will be given Nua-O magic smart cards that will allow them to access additional benefits such as bus or train travel, free WiFi, online courses, skill development, and coaching programmes.
According to data, approximately 4.5 lakh undergraduate and 32,000 postgraduate students are expected to benefit from the Nua-O scholarship. However, students whose parents are income tax payers or permanent government employees are ineligible for the scholarship.
