Description
The Rail Coach Factory (RCF) plans to release the first prototype of the Vande Metro coach in April.
A total of 16 such coaches are planned to be ready by the late part of the fiscal year 2024-25.
The Vande Metro is based on the concept of India's first indigenous semi-high-speed rail, Vande Bharat, which serves intercity passengers over distances of up to 250 kilometers.
Each Vande Metro train would have 16 air-conditioned coaches and can travel at a maximum speed of 130 kilometers per hour.
Features & Innovations
Vande Metro carriages will improve customer experience and accessibility, with each capable of accommodating 280 passengers (100 sitting and 180 standing).
The 3×3 bench seating design optimizes passenger capacity for a comfortable medium-distance journey.
In the event of an emergency, coaches will be equipped with a passenger talkback device that will allow them to communicate with the train driver.
Each coach will include 14 sensors for fire and smoke detection.
Wheelchair-accessible restrooms will be available in the coaches.
The Kavach system will be implemented to help prevent crashes.
Wide gangways between carriages will allow for a smooth walk through the train.
Windows and doors are built for safety and convenience, with larger openable hopper-type windows for emergency circumstances and automatic plug doors at the entrance for touchless operation.
RCF's Continued Innovation
In December, RCF introduced 24 specially designed Rajdhani sleeper coaches with hot water in the lavatories.
Another rake of 24 coaches will be introduced in March, with two more rakes expected in the following fiscal year.
Trials for Vistadome coaches on the Kalka-Shimla route have been completed satisfactorily.
RCF intends to produce 30 more Vistadome coaches in the coming fiscal year, pending safety approval.
A double-decker cargo liner coach, capable of carrying 46 passengers and six tons of goods, is now being tested on the Ambala-Sahnewal route.
