Description

The Finance Minister of India oversees the Ministry of Finance under the Government of India. The Ministry of Finance is one of the most senior positions in the Union Cabinet, with the Finance Minister of India as its head.

India's Finance Ministers are primarily responsible for administering the government's fiscal policy as well as developing and presenting the yearly Union Budget to Parliament. R. K. Shanmukham Chetty, India's inaugural finance minister, was in charge of delivering the country's first budget.

Nirmala Sitharaman has been the Finance Minister of India since her appointment on May 31, 2019, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration. She delivered her first Union Budget on July 5, 2019. Under her tenure, the Ministry of Finance established the Department of Public Enterprises, demonstrating the government's commitment to privatization and improved fiscal management of government-owned enterprises.
