The Khelo India Winter Games 2024, a major event on the Indian sports calendar, is set to begin, bringing with it the thrill and excitement of winter sports. This year's edition is particularly noteworthy because it marks the debut of the Union Territory of Ladakh as a host, alongside Jammu and Kashmir. The event is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Khelo India Mission, which aims to promote Olympic sports and develop talent in India.
Mascot- Sheen-e She
The majestic snow leopard, known as 'Sheen-e She' or 'Shan' in Ladakh, will serve as the mascot for the Khelo India Winter Games in 2024. The snow leopard, which is native to high-altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, represents the spirit of the Games and raises awareness about the conservation of this endangered species.
Logo: A Symbol Of Unity And Strength
The logo, which features the Indian tricolour, captures the beauty of the Himalayan landscape as well as the Games' diverse sports. It depicts a Dharmachakra (turning wheel of Dharma) atop a hill in Chanspa, Leh, the Games' venue, symbolizing the nation's unity and strength.
Dignitaries such as Lt. Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Shri Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), Shrimati Sujata Chaturvedi, Secretary (Sports), Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, and other senior officials unveiled the logo and mascot online.
Inauguration And Venues For Khelo India Winter Games 2024
The Games will be inaugurated on February 2 at the NDS stadium in Leh by Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Information & Broadcasting of India. The first part of the Winter Games, which will take place in Ladakh from February 2 to 6, will feature ice hockey and speed skating. The second part will be held in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, from February 21 to 25, with events including ski mountaineering, Alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, and gondola.
Ladakh’s Debut As Host
Ladakh's selection as a host for a portion of the Games represents a significant milestone. Brigadier Mishra expressed enthusiasm for Ladakh's role, citing the region's suitability for winter games and potential for expansion as hosts. Shri Sinha, who is in his fourth year with the Khelo India Winter Games in Jammu and Kashmir, extended his best wishes to the Ladakh administration.
