Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, a key player in the grand alliance (GA) government, resigned unexpectedly, citing dissatisfaction with the progress of talks within the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). Kumar had spearheaded the formation of INDIA to counter the BJP, but he was disappointed by the alliance's lack of cooperation.

Kumar, 72, left the GA government less than 18 months after it was formed with the support of Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), citing slow progress within the alliance. This is Kumar's fourth major political move.

Kumar tendered his resignation to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, urging the dissolution of the state government. The grand alliance, which was formed following Kumar's departure from the NDA in August 2022, came to an abrupt end. In Bihar's 243-member Assembly, the RJD has 79 seats, the BJP has 78, the JD(U) has 45, the Congress has 19, and others contribute to the political landscape. The NDA has 127 MLAs, compared to the grand alliance's 116, and thus holds a majority with one independent legislator.
