Description
A team of archaeologists recently unearthed two stone inscriptions of 'Grantham' and Tamil dating from the 11th and 16th centuries, respectively, in Pazhnchervazhi village near Kangalayam.
About The Grantham Inscriptions
Grantha is an important ancient script used to write Sanskrit in South East Asia and larger Tamil Nadu.
In Sanskrit, Grantha means 'a literary work'. Evidently, the script employed to write the Sanskrit books acquired the same name.
It was once widely used throughout South India.
When the Malayalam language began to freely take terms and grammar rules from Sanskrit, this script was used for writing the language and became known as Arya Ezhuthu.
In current incarnations, the Grantha and Tamil scripts look similar. Both scripts evolved from Brahmi in roughly comparable ways.
The evolution of the Grantha script in Tamil Nadu can be divided into four stages. Archaic and ornamental, transitional, medieval, and modern.
Pallava Grantha is an archaic and attractive plant variety. This variation includes Mahendravarman's Tiruchirapalli rock-cut cave and other cave temple inscriptions, Narasimhan's Mamallapuram, Kanchi Kailashnath, and Saluvankuppam temple inscriptions, and Mutharaiyar's Senthalai inscriptions.
The transitional type of Grantha inscriptions spans nearly three centuries, from 650 to 950 CE. Later Pallavas (e.g., Nandivarman's Kasakudi, Udayendram plates, etc.) and Pandyan Nedunjadaiyan's Anaimalai inscriptions demonstrate this.
The mediaeval variety lasted from approximately 950 CE until 1250 CE. Inscriptions from the imperial Cholas of Thanjavur are instances of this.
The present variety is from the later Pandya and Vijayanagar dynasties.
It remained popular in Tamil Nadu until the early twentieth century.
Following the invention of printing machines, many Sanskrit literature transcribed from palm leaves were printed in Grantha script.
Following Independence, the popularity of Hindi in Deva Nagari script impacted all printing works, and Grantha script fell out of favor.
