Batadrava Than
It is located in the Nagaon district of Assam. It is also known as the Bordowa Than and is one of the most sacred places for Assamese Vaishnavites. It is a temple complex located at the birthplace of revered Vaishnavite reformer and saint Srimanta Sankardeva. Sankardeva established the first Kirtan Ghar in Bordowa in 1494 AD to practice and preach the neo Vaishnavite faith in Assam during the fifteenth century, and he spread the Ek Saran Naam Dharma.
Characteristics
It is surrounded by brick walls and has two entrances. Sankardev initially built the Kirtan Ghar, a large prayer house, with temporary materials.
The Manikut is connected to the Kirtan Ghar and houses sacred texts, scriptures, and manuscripts.
The campus contains a variety of structures, including Natghar (Drama hall), Alohighar (Guest room), Sabhaghar (Assembly hall), Rabhaghar (Music room), Hatipukhuri, Aakashi Ganga, Doul Mandir (Festival temple), and others.
There is also a mini museum with historical articles and artefacts on display. Bordowa's devotees attend a large festival known as "Doul Mahotsava" (Holi) every year.
Facts About Sankardeva And His Philosophy
Sankardeva advocated for a society based on equality and fraternity, free of caste distinctions, traditional Brahmanical rituals, and sacrifices.
The Ek Saran Naam Dharma emphasized worship in the form of bhakti (devotion) to Lord Krishna through singing and congregational listening to His name and actions.
His teachings emphasized prayer and chanting (naam) over idol worship. His dharma consisted of four components: deva (god), naam (prayer), bhaktas (devotees), and guru (teacher).
Thans/Sattras are monastic institutions founded by Sankardeva's Neo-Vaishnavite reformist movement.
As the saint traveled across Assam spreading his teachings, these Sattras/Thans emerged as centers of religious, social, and cultural reform in the 16th century.
- The Sattras promote Sankardeva's distinctive "worship through art" approach through music (borgeet), dance (sattriya), and theatre (bhauna).
