Description

The Bharat Ratna Award is India's highest civilian award, established in 1954. The Bharat Ratna award is given to individuals for excellent public service and outstanding performance in any sphere of human activity, including literature, science, and art.

The Bharat Ratna award is open to all individuals, regardless of gender or occupation. The Bharat Ratna award is given to no more than three people each year. The President of India presents the Bharat Ratna Award. This award is also given posthumously; 16 persons have received the Bharat Ratna posthumously.

Bharat Ratna Award Winners' Names

Each year, only three Bharat Ratna awards are given. The constitution prohibits the use of the Bharat Ratna as a prefix or suffix to the recipient's name. The recipient of the award is presented with a sanad or certificate signed by the president, as well as a medal.

The medal is shaped like a peepal leaf and is 5.8 cm in length, 4.7 cm in width, and 3.1 mm thick. It's a bronze medal with an embossed depiction of the sun in the center, measuring 1.6 cm in diameter. On the reverse side of the medal, the state emblem and the country's motto are engraved in Devnagri script.

The inaugural Bharat Ratna award was given to politician C.Rajagopalachari, philosopher Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and scientist CV Raman in 1954.

Karpoori Thakur, a renowned socialist leader and former Bihar Chief Minister, is slated to receive India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, posthumously. The announcement of this renowned accolade comes on the eve of his 100th birthday.
