Description
The Prime Minister recently broke down in tears while addressing a gathering at a ceremony to dedicate homes built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban Scheme.
About The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) Scheme
PMAY-U, which has been in operation since June 2015, is one of India's key flagship projects overseen by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
Objective Provide all-weather pucca dwellings to all qualified beneficiaries in the country's metropolitan areas by 2022, through States/UTs/Central Nodal Agencies.
The system applies to the entire country's urban area, which includes all statutory towns as of Census 2011 and towns notified later, as well as Notified Planning/Developmental Areas.
- The scheme is being implemented via four verticals-
Beneficiary Led Construction and Enhancement (BLC)
The programs include Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP),
In-Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR),
Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS).
In August 2022, the Union Cabinet approved the prolongation of PMAY-U till December 31, 2024, with all verticals except CLSS, for the completion of already sanctioned dwellings until March 31, 2022.
Funding The credit-linked subsidy component will be implemented as a Central Sector Scheme, while the remaining three components will be implemented as Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS).
All PMAY-U residences provide basic utilities such as a toilet, water supply, electricity, and a kitchen.
The Mission encourages women's empowerment by allowing female members to buy residences in their individual or joint names.
Preference has also been provided to differently abled persons, senior citizens, SCs, STs, OBCs, Minority, single women, transgender and other weaker & vulnerable parts of the society.
