The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a circular outlining the guidelines for implementing the Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA) 2023-24 in all CBSE-accredited private schools.
The scheme is run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) of the Government of India for scheduled caste students and is only applicable to private residential schools affiliated with the board up to class 12. The scheme, which will run until 2026, aims to provide meritorious Scheduled Caste students with residential educational opportunities.

Who Can Apply For The SHRESHTA 2023-24 Scheme?
The SHRESHTA 2023-24 scheme is only available to CBSE-affiliated private residential schools. The relevant schools must have been in operation for at least 5 years and have achieved a pass rate of 75% or higher in class 10 and 12 in the previous three years.
Schools must have adequate infrastructure to admit at least 10 SC students in class 9 and 10 (together), and the school's status must be residential, according to OASIS data.
Students who meet the eligibility requirements will be admitted to class 9 and 11. Students are assigned to schools based on their merit and preferences through a web-based counselling process.
According to the official notice, approximately 3000 students are selected each year under the scheme through the National Entrance Test administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Selection Of Schools For The SHRESHTA Scheme 2023-24
The schools chosen by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment (DoSJE) for the scheme must publish the year-by-year and grade-by-grade admission numbers on their website. CBSE directed schools to ensure that they met the aforementioned criteria before approving the scheme with DoSJE.
Schools interested in participating may send their consent directly to the responsible department. Once the consent has been approved by the designated department, the schools cannot refuse the allotted students.
