Description

India plans to organize a year-long festival to foster worldwide ties through the celebration of Ramayan and its cultural importance. It coincides with the inauguration of the Ayodhya Ram Temple and marks the beginning of a cultural spectacle that will bring the globe together via the Ramayana.

The Grand Inauguration

The celebration is set to begin on January 18 at Delhi's famous Purana Qila (Old Fort) and then travel to Lucknow, Ayodhya, and Varanasi. This marks the start of a cultural journey through the rich fabric of the epic Ramayana.

Iconic Locations And Cultural Activities

Cultural activities will take place in partnership with state governments in iconic Ramayana sites such as Chitrakoot in Madhya Pradesh, Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, Sitamarhi in Bihar, Hampi in Karnataka, and Kanniyakumari in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, places such as Bhopal and Jaipur will organize celebrations, making it a national festival.

Global Participation

India hopes to cross borders with this celebration by involving seven neighboring countries, including Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State for Culture, stated that Indian missions overseas are actively working with countries to confirm their participation, guaranteeing a diverse and inclusive celebration.

The Festival's Diverse Offerings

The "Year of Connecting the World Through Ramayana" offers a diverse range of events, beginning with the first week at Purana Qila from January 18 to 24. The events include Ramayana-themed ballet performances, discussions, and interactive arts and crafts exhibitions.

Cultural Exchange: Featuring Diverse Ramayana Traditions

Minister Lekhi expressed enthusiasm for the rare opportunity for Indian audiences to learn about Ramayana traditions in other nations. Performances will include Indonesia's Kakawin Ramayana, Bali's Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet play), Thailand's Khon Ramakien, the Philippines' Maranaco folk dance, Cambodia's ancient puppetry Ramayana, and renditions from Vietnam, Malaysia, and Mauritius.

The International Audience

The event hopes to draw members of the diplomatic corps, art connoisseurs, scholars, and dignitaries from other professions. This openness contributes to the festival's purpose of promoting cross-cultural understanding and respect.

India International Ramayana Mela

Kumar Tuhin, Director General of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), stated that this festival is an essential component of the seventh edition of the "India International Ramayan Mela." The cultural and academic activities scheduled across the country highlight the Ramayana's lasting relevance and universality.

Ayodhya's Role In The Celebration

Some of the performances from the event will also be shown in Ayodhya during the Ram Temple inauguration ceremony on January 22. The spectacular 'Pran Pratishtha' ritual at the Ayodhya temple has drew international attention, with about 100 heads of state from 55 countries, including ambassadors and members of parliament, invited to witness this historic occasion.
