Description
The Prime Minister of India recently paid a visit to the Kalaram Mandir on the banks of the Godavari in Nashik, Maharashtra's Panchavati district.
About The Kalaram Temple
The Kalaram temple gets its name from a black figure of the Lord - Kala Ram means "Black Ram" in Sanskrit.
It was completed in 1792 thanks to the efforts of Sardar Rangarao Odhekar.
It is situated on the banks of the Godavari in the Panchavati district of the city.
Features
The sanctum sanctorum contains statues of Ram, Sita, and Lakshman, as well as a black Hanuman idol near the main entrance.
The main temple has 14 stairs, representing Ram's 14-year exile. It includes 84 pillars, which reflect the 84 lakh species cycle that one must go through in order to be born as a human.
Historical Importance
This temple was the scene of Babasaheb Ambedkar's major fight for temple access privileges for Dalits over 90 years ago.
In 1930, B R Ambedkar and Marathi teacher and social activist Pandurang Sadashiv Sane, often known as Sane Guruji, spearheaded a campaign for Dalit access to Hindu temples.
This movement sought to challenge the harsh caste rules that were prevalent at the time.
During the satyagraha, Ambedkar and his 15,000 Dalit followers peacefully protested the temple.
