The External Affairs Minister recently announced that the Government of India has decided to incorporate Farsi (Persian) as one of India's classical languages under the New Education Policy.
About The Farsi Language
Farsi, also known as Persian Language, is the most widely spoken member of the Indo-Iranian language family, a subgroup of the Indo-European language family.
It is the official language of Iran, and two dialects of Persian, Dari and Tajik, are also official languages of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, respectively.
Other Persian Gulf countries with significant populations of Farsi speakers include Bahrain, Iraq, Oman, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as considerable communities in the United States.
It has around 62 million native speakers, placing it among the world's twenty most widely spoken first languages.
Farsi in Iran is written in Perso-Arabic, a variant of the Arabic script with certain changes to allow for Persian phonetic peculiarities. Following the Islamic conquest of Persia in the seventh century, this script came into use.
It is related to northern Indian languages and, to a lesser extent, the major European languages, including English.
Key Facts About Classical Languages In India
The following criteria have been developed by the Government of India to decide the certification of a language as a Classical language: - High antiquity of its early texts/recorded history over a period of 1500-2000 years;
A corpus of ancient literature/texts regarded as a valued inheritance by successive generations of speakers;
The literary heritage must be unique and not copied from another language community.
Because classical language and literature differ from modern, there may be a break between classical language and later forms or offshoots.
Currently, six languages have 'Classical' status: Tamil (announced in 2004), Sanskrit (2005), Kannada (2008), Telugu (2008), Malayalam (2013), and Odia (2014).
Once a language is recognized as a Classical language, it offers the following benefits-
Two important annual worldwide awards for distinguished scholars in classical Indian languages.
A Center of Excellence for Classical Language Studies is being established.
The University Grants Commission is recommended to establish, at least in the Central Universities, a number of Professional Chairs for the Classical Languages as declared."
