Mizoram University's zoology department discovered a new species of coral snake in Mizoram.

The New Coral Snake Species

• Sinomicrurus gorei is named after the British Indian doctor Gore.

• The reptile is known as 'Rulthihna' because it resembles a Mizo traditional amber necklace called 'Thihna'.

• There are nine species of Sinomicrurus coral snakes discovered around the world, with only one, Sinomicrurus macclellandi, found in Northeast India.

• It has distinct patterns, different scales, hemipenis, DNA, and a skull.

• Until this study, Sinomicrurus gorei was thought to be the same species as Sinomicrurus macclellandi due to their similarity.

• The new study also found that Sinomicrurus macclellandi can lay 6-14 eggs at once, whereas Sinomicrurus gorei can lay up to three eggs.

• Sinomicrurus macclellandi is most commonly found in hilly or elevated areas in Mizoram, whereas Sinomicrurus gorei can be found in both low-lying and hilly areas.
