Bharat Stage VI Norms
India's BS VI emission rules, which went into effect nationwide on April 1, 2020, are among the most strict in the world. They set significantly lower limits on dangerous fine particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions than previous BS IV standards.
Before being approved for mass production and sales, all new vehicles sold in India must have BS VI certification that demonstrates compliance with prescribed emissions caps through standardized laboratory testing.
The program aims to significantly improve air quality by requiring automakers to use advanced emissions control technologies such as catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters, and improved engine combustion strategies.
Features Of New BS VI Test Regulations
Vehicles can be certified using either gasoline blended with 10% (E10) or 20% ethanol (E20). Biodiesel blends containing up to 7% diesel are permitted, but higher blends must be tested against neat biodiesel fuel.
All bi-fuel flex vehicles must be tested for gaseous and particulate matter emissions in both fuel modes. Hybrid and hydrogen vehicles only need to monitor nitrogen oxide levels.
Particulate Matter (PM) mass and number limits only apply to vehicles with direct injection engines. This testing can reveal excessive emissions due to inefficient fuel combustion.
Emission sampling begins at engine startup and continues throughout a simulated driving cycle with a maximum speed of 90 km/hr, which is typical of Indian city roads.
Conformity Check random parallel tests on at least 50% of a vehicle model's annual production must match certification values to ensure continuous compliance.

The notification clarifies allowable fuels and test parameters for automakers looking to obtain timely BS VI certification. However, increased conformity testing raises the bar for maintaining strict emissions control once vehicle models enter the mass market.
While increasing ethanol blending in gasoline has economic implications for consumers, BS VI vehicles offer significant air quality benefits over older models by emitting significantly less. However, their sophisticated engines are still sensitive to fuel quality, so using adulterated black market fuel can easily sabotage emission performance.
