Description
The inaugural meeting of the Inland Waterways Development Council (IWDC) was held in Kolkata by the Inland Waterways Authority of India, which is part of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW). Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, coordinated this historic event, which brought together delegates from waterway states, central government officials, and specialists aboard the MV Ganga Queen.

Critical Issues In The Development Of Inland Waterways
The inaugural IWDC addressed crucial challenges in India's inland waterway development. The main topics of discussion were fairway development, private sector engagement, and enhancing cargo transit efficiency in inland water transport (IWT).
These conversations aim to promote and build eco-friendly passenger vessels, investigate the economic benefits of river cruise tourism, and advocate for sustainable practices.
Strategic Goals And Maritime Goals
The shipping ministry set a strategic target of increasing the modal share of inland water transportation (IWT) from 2% to 5%, in line with the aims specified in the Maritime India Vision 2030.
The ministry aimed to dramatically enhance the existing IWT cargo volume from roughly 120 MTPA to over 500 MTPA as part of the ambitious Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. This represented significant progress in the development of inland waterways, which promotes economic growth and sustainable transportation choices.

The formation of the Inland Waterways Development Council in October 2023 demonstrated the Indian government's commitment to completely developing inland waterways and the associated Inland Water Transport (IWT) ecosystem.
