Description
Arindam Bagchi, the official spokesperson at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), has handed over the baton to Randhir Jaiswal in a significant transition. This decision follows the appointment of Arindam Bagchi as India's next Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva in October 2023. Mr. Bagchi, a seasoned 1995-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer serving as the MEA's Additional Secretary, took over as spokesperson in March 2021.
Mr. Bagchi played a critical role in representing India's foreign policy during his tenure, which included the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic and other critical events. During his tenure, the India-China standoff in eastern Ladakh, India's successful hosting of the G20 Summit in September, and a heightened pace of diplomatic engagement with various global partners were all witnessed.
The Appointment Of New Spokesperson
Randhir Jaiswal, an IFS officer from the 1998 batch, has taken over as the official spokesperson. Mr. Jaiswal has an impressive resume, having previously served as consul general in New York since July 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was praised for actively participating in the repatriation efforts of Indian Americans, demonstrating his diplomatic skills during an unprecedented global health crisis.
Mr. Jaiswal's diplomatic career has taken him to Portugal, Cuba, South Africa, and India's permanent mission to the United Nations in New York. His diverse experience qualifies him to succeed Arindam Bagchi as MEA spokesperson, where he will be expected to navigate and articulate India's foreign policy in an ever-changing global landscape.
