Description

A new species of chaoyangopterid pterosaur has been identified by palaeontologists from China and Brazil.

Pterosaur Facts

  • A pterosaur is any of the flying reptiles that lived throughout the Mesozoic Era (252.2 million to 66 million years ago) during all three periods (Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous).

  • Although pterosaurs are not dinosaurs, they are archosaurs, or "ruling reptiles," which include birds and crocodiles.

  • They were also the first animals to evolve powered flight after insects, not just leaping or gliding, but flapping their wings to generate lift and move through the air.

  • Pterosaurs were not only the first reptiles to fly. They were the first vertebrates to fly as well.

  • It contained the late Cretaceous Quetzalcoatlus, the biggest creature ever known to fly.

  • Flight in pterosaurs evolved independently of flight in birds and bats; pterosaurs are not closely linked to either birds or bats and thus constitute a typical example of convergent evolution.

  • A complex membrane of skin spanning from the thorax to a drastically enlarged fourth finger constituted their wings.

  • Pterosaurs became extinct around the end of the Cretaceous period, around 65.5 million years ago, during the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event (K-T extinction event).
