Description
About The Qiantang River
It is a river in southeast China that flows through the provinces of Anhui and Jiangxi.
It flows through Zhejiang for 459 kilometers, passing through the capital city of Hangzhou and Yanguan Town, Haining, and Jiaxing City before entering the East China Sea via Hangzhou Bay.
The river is also the southern terminal of the ancient Grand Canal, which connects five major rivers in China from north to south, allowing traffic to travel north to Beijing via the Canal from Hangzhou.
It is surrounded by a group of economically thriving cities, including Shanghai, the country's leading industrial and commercial hub, and Ningbo, one of China's leading port cities.
The magnificent Qiantang River Tidal Bore is one of the world's largest tidal bores. The highest tidal bore can reach 9 meters (30 feet) in height.

A tidal bore is a strong tide that pushes against the current up the river.
A surge is a tidal bore. A surge is defined as a sudden change in depth.
A positive surge occurs when a channel suddenly becomes deeper. A negative surge occurs when a channel suddenly becomes shallower. Positive surges are tidal bores.
The bore is higher near the river's banks than it is midstream.
Some bores continue to move upstream for about a half hour after high water because of momentum.
Bores occur at spring tides and several tides before and after spring tides, but never at neap tides.
