About Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)

• CWD, also known as Zombie deer disease, is a neurological condition that affects deer and other cervids (deer family members) caused by the abnormal proliferation of a misfolded protein known as a prion.

• This prion alters healthy brain proteins, resulting in a variety of symptoms.

CWD is contagious CWD is infectious, and it can spread freely within and between cervid groups.

Transmission  CWD is transmitted directly through animal-to-animal contact and indirectly by contact with infectious material-contaminated objects or settings (including saliva, urine, feces, and carcasses of CWD-infected animals).

Symptoms

• It might take up to a year for an infected animal to exhibit symptoms, which can include wasting, stumbling, listlessness, and other neurologic signs. 
  

• CWD is especially worrying since it has the potential to damage both animals and people, with transmission via eating of infected meat.
  

• CWD can harm animals of all ages, and some infected animals may die before the disease manifests itself.

• CWD is lethal to animals, and no therapies or vaccines are available.
