Description
During a patrol, forest department workers in Odisha apprehended four poachers and two timber smugglers from the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj district.
About The Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR)
STR is located in the Mayurbhanj District, in the far northwestern section of Odisha.
It was designated a 'Tiger Reserve' in 1956 and became part of the national conservation effort 'Project Tiger' in 1973.
It is surrounded by high plateaus and hills, with the highest peaks being the Khairiburu and Meghashini twin peaks (1515m above mean sea level).
UNESCO inducted the STR and a 'transitional region' of 2250 square kilometers into the World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2009.
The topography is primarily undulating and mountainous, with open pastures and wooded regions intermingled.
The steeply sloping plateau rises abruptly from the flat coastal plains. The steep side faces the Bay of Bengal and goes north until it meets Chhota Nagpur.
The water level is high, and the tract is intertwined with perennial water sources that run into rivers such as the Budhabalanga, Salandi, and several tributaries of the Baitarani River that flow from the Reserve.
Vegetation
It has a diverse range of forest types and habitats, with Northern tropical moist deciduous dominating certain semi-evergreen parts.
It is the only landscape in the world where melanistic tigers may be found.
A number of tribes live in the area surrounding STR, including the Kolha, Santhala, Bhumija, Bhatudi, Gondas, Khadia, Mankadia, and Sahara.
Flora
There are 1078 plant species identified here, including 94 orchid species.
The primary tree species in this area is Sal.
Fauna
Leopard, Gaur, Elephant, Langur, Barking and Spotted Deer, Sloth Bear Mongoose, Flying Squirrel, Porcupine, Turtle, Monitor Lizard, Python, Sambar, Pangolin, and other flora and fauna.
