Description

Russia recently used an AS-24 KILLJOY hypersonic missile in an ongoing aerial strike on Ukraine, which the country has billed as a "invincible weapon."

About AS-24 Killjoy

  • The Kh-47M2 (Kinzhal) is the western reporting name for a nuclear-capable Russian air-launched hypersonic ballistic missile.

  • During a speech in March 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented six "next generation" weapons.

  • It has the ability to achieve speeds of up to Mach 10 (12,350 km/hr).

  • It can carry conventional and nuclear warheads with payloads ranging from 480 kg to 10-50 kt, as well as a thermonuclear variant with a 10-50 kt warhead.

  • It is said to have a range of 1,500-2,000 km.

  • It has an 8-meter length, a 1-meter body diameter, and a launch weight of about 4,300 kg.

  • It is intended to be launched by MiG-31 fighter jets at heights of around 18 kilometers (59,000 feet).

  • This missile maneuvers throughout its flight to avoid opposing air defense systems.

What Exactly Are Hypersonic Weapons?

  • Hypersonic weapons travel at speeds of at least Mach 5, are highly maneuverable, and can change course while in flight.

  • They differ from ballistic missiles, which, while capable of traveling at hypersonic speeds (at least Mach 5), have fixed paths and limited maneuverability.

  • Hypersonic weapons are classified into two types: hypersonic glide vehicles and hypersonic cruise missiles.

  • A rocket is used to launch hypersonic glide vehicles. The glide vehicle subsequently separates from the rocket and "glides" toward a target at speeds of at least Mach 5.

  • High-speed, air-breathing engines power hypersonic cruise missiles.
