Chirag Shetty and Satwik Sai Raj Rankireddy of India earned the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award recently given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
About Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award
The "Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award" (erstwhile Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratan Award) is India's highest athletic honor, named after the hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand (1905-79), an Indian great field hockey player.
The award was established in 1991-1992 and is given out annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India.
Eligibility
A sportsperson's spectacular and most outstanding performance in international sports and games, i.e. Olympic/Asian/Commonwealth/World Games/Championships/World Cup and equivalently recognized international tournaments, over a four-year period immediately preceding the year in which the award is to be given.
During the years when the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games are held, the achievements of athletes in these Games and other aforementioned events up to the completion of the Olympic Games/Commonwealth Games/Asian Games, as applicable, will be evaluated.
Sportspeople who have been penalized or against whom an investigation is active or ongoing for the use of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-banned drugs/substances are ineligible for the prize.
General Terms And Conditions
No award shall be given to the same person a second time.
Every year, just one prize will be granted to an individual athlete. Only in extreme circumstances may this rule be lifted.
If the need arises, the prize may be bestowed posthumously.
For particular circumstances, including doping, the Government of India may cancel or invalidate the award for any laureate.
Benefits
The following will be included in the award-
A cash sum of Rupees 250,000 that is exempt from income and wealth taxes.
Each athlete receives an honorary certificate.
Each athlete received one medal.
