Description

The first round of crash testing for cars under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) was recently completed with success.

About Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP)

  • It is an indigenous star-rating system for crash testing automobiles, with vehicles receiving one to five stars indicating their safety in the event of a collision.

  • Bharat NCAP is a large-scale collaboration between the Government of India (GoI) and Global NCAP, the regulatory agency in charge of safety crash test ratings.

Goal

  • To assist consumers in making informed decisions before purchasing an automobile, hence increasing demand for safer vehicles.

  • Cars voluntarily nominated by automobile manufacturers will be crash tested in accordance with the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.

Applicability

  • The program applies to passenger vehicles with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver's seat and a gross vehicle weight of no more than 3,500 kg.

Only The Basic Model Of A Variant Will Be Tested

  • In addition to internal combustion engine (ICE) models, CNG cars and battery-powered electric vehicles are eligible for the safety test.

Assignment Of Rating

  • The Bharat NCAP evaluates vehicles in three essential safety domains: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, and safety assist technologies.

  • The AIS-197 standards serve as the foundation for the testing program. In collaboration with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), the selected test units will be delivered to the nearest testing facility.

Each Vehicle Will Be Subjected To Five Major Tests

  • Frontal, side, and side pole impact, electronic stability control, and pedestrian-compliant front design.

  • The testing will use crash dummies and will rate the safety features of automobiles.

  • Following these testing, cars are given a star rating ranging from one to five, indicating their level of safety.

  • Unlike Global NCAP, which has distinct Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and Child Occupant Protection (COP) ratings, Bharat NCAP will have a single rating.

  • It is a voluntary program in which the cost of the car for star rating evaluation, as well as the cost of such assessment, is borne by the relevant vehicle manufacturer or importer.

  • In contrast to other countries where NCAP is carried out by non-governmental groups, India will have its own Bharat NCAP Authority. The agency will also make the safety ratings of all new car models available to the public on a website.

  • Though vehicle manufacturers will be free to submit their vehicles for testing, the central government may request that a specific variant of a model be tested "in the interest of public safety" at any of the designated crash test facilities.
