In August 2019, the Government of India, unwavering in its promise to providing safe and clean tap water to every rural home in the country, began the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). This mission, carried out in conjunction with governments, aims to secure the regular and long-term supply of water in enough amount and of prescribed quality.
Progress Since Inception
There has been great success in improving rural households' access to tap water since the launch of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
In August 2019, only 16.8% of rural households (3.23 crore) had access to running water.
States/UTs claim that an additional 10.53 crore rural households have been given with tap water connections under JJM as of December 7, 2023.
As a result, of the 19.24 million rural households in the country, about 71.51% (13.76 million) currently have access to running water.
Water Quality Technological Innovations
Water quality is a vital component of the Jal Jeevan Mission. The decision on which technology to use to address water quality concerns in affected areas is made by the relevant state/UT governments.
The Government of India works with academic institutions, notably Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), to provide guidance on various water quality technologies.
Contribution Of IIT-Madras: 'AMRIT' Technology
AMRIT' (Arsenic and Metal Removal by Indian Technology), established by the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, is one important technological innovation.
When water is run through this technique, nano-scale iron oxy-hydroxide selectively removes arsenic.
Designed for both domestic and community use, 'AMRIT' has been recommended by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation's 'Standing Committee' for its efficacy in water purification.
The Effects Of Arsenic Exposure
Prolonged exposure to arsenic through water and food may result in cancer and skin problems. Recent research suggests a link between drinking contaminated water and the development of diabetes, hypertension, and reproductive issues.
Exposure during pregnancy and early infancy has been linked to impaired cognitive development and higher mortality in young people.
CWPPs (Community Water Purification Plants)
According to the Department's Integrated Management Information System (IMIS), as of December 6, 2023, all 378 arsenic-affected habitations that had yet to get tap water supply have been provided with clean drinking water via Community Water Purification Plants (CWPPs).
These plants meet the most basic needs of the people, providing safe drinking and cooking water.
