Description
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recently reclassified the Saiga (Saiga tatarica) species status from Critically Endangered to Near Threatened.
The Saiga Antelope
- It is a big herbivore that migrates.
Appearance
This antelope has a distinctive look, with an enormous and flexible nose, the interior structure of which functions as a filter.
In the summer, their huge noses filter away dust stirred up by the herd, while in the winter, they warm the frigid air before it reaches their lungs.
It lives in open dry steppe grasslands and semi-arid deserts.
The antelope was previously distributed throughout the Eurasian Steppe, a vast expanse of grassland that runs from Hungary in Europe to Manchuria in Asia.
It is currently found in isolated groups in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the Russian Federation, and Uzbekistan.
Saiga tatarica (found throughout the range) and Saiga tatarica mongolica (found only in Mongolia) are the two subspecies of the Saiga.
