Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science's (IISc.) molecular biophysics unit have discovered that peptides (short proteins) produced by Budgett's frog can resist enzymes of disease-causing infections in a study.
Regarding Budgett's Frog
Behaviour
Budgett's frogs are extremely intelligent and aggressive.
When they are scared, they inflate themselves, stand on their short legs, and if this does not discourage the possible predator, they lunge at them with an open large mouth and a piercing screech.
Budgett's frogs spend the dry season in tunnels they dig in the bottoms of pools of water.
They will shed many layers of skin while in the tunnel in order to construct a waterproof cocoon that will keep the frog moist.
When foraging for food, they rely on their extraordinary night vision and sensitivity to movement.
They are found in Paraguay, Argentina, and Bolivia beside or in permanent or seasonal bodies of water.
Status Of Conservation
IUCN Red List: Least Concern
The study's Key Results
Peptides (short proteins) derived from amphibian skin have long been investigated due to their capacity to combat adverse environmental conditions, including infections.
The peptide generated by frogs blocked two critical enzymes produced by pathogens, subtilisin Carlsberg and proteinase K.
These enzymes play an important role in the spread of diseases by destroying the infected person's particular protection proteins.
The peptide was found to be as efficient as SSI, a well-known subtilisin inhibitor, by acting through a slow-tight binding mechanism.
During the procedure, the researchers demonstrate the creation of a Michaelis complex - a tight, noncovalent compound with the intact inhibitor.
