The Tamil Nadu government announced on December 10 that the half-yearly examinations for state-run and government-aided schools will be held on December 13.
The exams, which were scheduled to begin on December 11, have been postponed across the state at the request of Chief Minister M K Stalin, according to an official release.
The School Education Department has released a new calendar in which exams for classes 6 to 12 will be held from December 13 to 22.
In light of Cyclone 'Michaung,' a holiday has been declared for schools in Chennai, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts from December 4 to 9.
The schools are scheduled to resume on December 11, and the government has set aside 1.90 crore for objectives such as cleaning the premises of schools in Chennai and three other surrounding districts that were damaged by severe rains and floods.
Textbooks and notebooks would be handed on December 12 to students whose books had been damaged or lost due to rain and flooding.
Exams have been postponed because students cannot prepare for exam without books.
A same question paper is used throughout Tamil Nadu, hence exams have been postponed in all districts, according to an official.
