Description

The Minister of State for Home Affairs recently informed the Rajya Sabha that the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) has been set up in 1022 places across the country.

About National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS)

  • It is a searchable database of crime and criminal-related fingerprints across India.

  • The Central Fingerprint Bureau of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in New Delhi is in charge of it.

  • It serves as a central data repository by aggregating fingerprint data from all states and union territories.

  • It allows law enforcement authorities to upload, trace, and retrieve data from the database in real time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  • It is feasible to use this to locate a person of interest in minutes and link that person's identity to any active warrants, warnings, or information about connected criminal conduct held in other police information reference systems.

Working Of NAFIS

  • Based on biometrics, it issues each criminal a unique 10-digit National Fingerprint Number.

  • The offender's unique ID will be utilized for the rest of his or her life. Crimes reported under separate FIRs would be logged as occurrences under the same National Fingerprint Number.

  • The first two digits of the ID will be the state code of the criminal's registration state, followed by a sequence number.

  • The state partition will contain state-specific IDs.
