Astronomers Have Recently Discovered A New Pulsar, Using ASKAP

Description

Astronomers have detected a new pulsar using the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), which has been designated PSR J10325804.

Regarding Pulsars

  • Pulsars are revolving neutron stars that emit radiation pulses at fairly regular intervals ranging from milliseconds to seconds.

  • Pulsars have extremely powerful magnetic fields that channel jets of particles out along their two magnetic poles. These accelerated particles produce extremely intense light beams.

  • Because the magnetic field is not always aligned with the spin axis, those particle and light beams are swept around as the star rotates.

  • We witness a pulse as the beam crosses our line of sight; in other words, we see pulsars turn on and off when the beam sweeps over Earth.

  • Pulsar masses range from 1.18 to 1.97 times that of the Sun, with the majority of pulsars having a mass of 1.35 times that of the Sun.

About Neutron Star

  • When a huge star runs out of fuel and collapses under its own gravity, it forms an extraordinarily dense and compact celestial object.

  • The core of the star collapses, squeezing together every proton and electron to form a neutron.

  • If the collapsing star's core mass is between 1 and 3 solar masses, the newly generated neutrons can arrest the collapse, leaving behind a neutron star. (Higher-mass stars will continue to collapse into stellar-mass black holes.)

  • Because neutron stars began as stars, they are found throughout the galaxy in the same regions where stars are found. They, like stars, can be found alone or in binary systems with a companion.
