Description
South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, is preparing to adopt the Miyawaki method for the first time in its operational territories in an effort to increase forest cover in Chhattisgarh's coal belt region. SECL's Gevra Area will see the implementation of a two-hectare Miyawaki forest pilot project in conjunction with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (CGRVVN) at a cost of Rupees 4 crores.
The Miyawaki Method
The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, entails planting native trees, shrubs, and groundcover plants in close proximity to one another inside every square meter. This approach, which is best suited for small plots of land, develops a dense canopy layer of tall trees, allowing for quick green cover growth.
Details On The Pilot Project
The Gevra Area pilot project aims to plant 20,000 seedlings over a two-year period utilizing the Miyawaki technique. Bargad, Peepal, Aam, Jamun (large plants), Karanj, Amla, Ashok (middle plants), and Kaner, Gudhal, Trikoma, Ber, Anjeer, Nimbu (small plants) would be included in the plantation.
Local Communities And Wildlife Benefits
The program is expected to benefit local inhabitants and wildlife by increasing green cover around the Gevra mine, India's largest coal mine. The indigenous plants chosen for the Miyawaki plantation require little maintenance, can survive harsh weather and water scarcity, and contribute to rapid green cover development.
Environmental Effects And Dust Control
SECL's Miyawaki forest project is intended to play a critical role in dust particle absorption and surface temperature regulation. The project is consistent with SECL's commitment to environmental conservation and reducing the environmental effect of mining activities.
SECL's Ongoing Environmental Initiatives
SECL, India's largest coal producer, has been aggressive in environmental programs. In FY 2023-24, the company has already greened 475 hectares of land and planted 10.77 lakh seedlings, the most of any Coal India subsidiary. SECL has secured an agreement with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam and Madhya Pradesh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam for a four-year plantation and maintenance program for Rs 169 crores.
