Description
The Panchayat Development Index was recently introduced to the Lok Sabha by the Union Minister of State for Panchayati Raj.
About The Panchayat Development Index
It is a multi-domain and multi-sectoral indicator designed to analyze panchayats' overall holistic development, performance, and advancement.
It considers a variety of socioeconomic indicators and factors to assess the well-being and development condition of local communities under the jurisdiction of a panchayat.
It would play an important role in performance evaluation and progress assessment in realizing the localization of SDGs in rural areas.
The Local Indicators Framework on nine themes of Localization of Sustainable Development Goals was produced as part of this.
The nine themes considered are poverty-free and improved livelihood in villages, healthy villages, child-friendly villages, water-sufficient villages, clean and green villages, villages with self-sufficient infrastructure, villages with good governance, and villages friendly to women.
Ranks
This Index rates panchayats based on their scores and divides them into four grades-
- Those who score less than 40% are classified as D, those who score 40-60% as C, 60-75 percent as B, 75-90 percent as A, and those who score more than 90 percent as A+.
Significance
It would provide significant insights into areas that need to be improved in rural areas under the jurisdiction of panchayats.
It aids in the identification of inequities, the accomplishment of development goals, and the formulation of targeted policies and interventions to improve the general well-being and quality of life in rural areas.
